Treatment of Chronic Osteomyelitis of the Calcaneus by Calcanectomy

Abstract

|
Chronic osteomyelitis of the calcaneus is relatively rare and difficult to treat. Calcanectomy has been suggested as preferred treatment because the previous classic methods of treatment of osteomyelitis left much to be desired. Gaenslen's
operation
result in a fragile scar and high recurrent rate. The operation that are less radical than calcanectomy are not reasonably effective for treatment of the majority of patients with extensive chronic osteomyelitis of the calcaneus.
We attempted to treat chronic osteomyelitis of the calcaneus by calcanectomy and followed up for more than 3 years at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Pusan national University Hospital.
